Someone once asked the question, If a person slew another person in a city of refuge, what would happen? Would they be forced to flee to another city of refuge? Using the text, there is a simple answer. The explanations of the town of refuge are in Numbers 35, Deut 4:41-43, and Deuteronomy 19.

In Deuteronomy 2, Moses talks about Israel’s relatives in Canaan (Edom, Moab, and Ammon) and the giants they faced to get their land. In this chapter, Moses reveals two things. First, they have no reason to fear the giants dwelling among the Canaanites, as these are only a remnant of the Rephaites (giants) who were there before. The rest of whom were previously defeated by Israel’s relatives, so they are not immortal, nor is defeating them impossible. Second, the promised land is a specific geographical section that God will give to the Israelites, and they shouldn’t attempt to take land from their relatives unless God hands it over, as that is their allotted portion.

Does the Bible say a woman has to marry her rapist in Deut 22:28-29? Most translations don’t use the word rape because the Hebrew text doesn’t use that word in these specific verses. That verse describes what happens in the case of fornication when a woman is neither married nor engaged and just has sex. If they are caught, no one is stoned to death, and the man is required to pay her dowry and marry her, but only with her father’s permission.

In Deuteronomy 22:13-30, Moses reiterated the sexual purity rules outlined in the Moral Purity laws of Leviticus and then elaborated on them. Many are disturbed when they see that only a woman is punished for her lack of virginity, never the man. However, this law is not against a lack of virginity but instead against initiating a marriage with a lie, when looking at the broader context of Deuteronomy 22.
